11 December 2024
The II African Cinema Conference, held on 4 December 2024, organised by the lecturer of the Department of Social and Human Sciences, Mercedes Jabardo, has sought to build bridges between African cinema and the perspectives of local filmmakers, with a special emphasis on the women behind the cameras.
The focus of this edition has highlighted the diverse themes and innovative narratives introduced by women filmmakers, who are transforming cinematic language and expanding cultural boundaries through their stories. Guests include MaÏmouna Jallow, Debora Ekoka and Alejandra Ntutumu.
According to the organisers, this day is a unique opportunity to reflect on the new trends in women’s cinema and to share experiences between African and local female creators. In addition, the event aims to consolidate the role of the UMH as a cultural and academic meeting point, uniting diverse communities through the art of cinema.
The films that have been screened are Banel & Adama by Ramata-Toulaye Sy (2023) at 11:00 and The Accidental City by Maimouna Jallow (2021) at 17:00. After the first screening, there will be a discussion on the diversity of female gazes in new African cinema. On the other hand, the second screening will be followed by a colloquium on the film previously seen.
